My votes in the .net magazine awards 2009

Here's my take on the list of nominees in the 2009 .net magazine awards.
The full list is available on thenetawards.com and you have until october 12 to cast your vote.

1. Web application of the year

My vote: Spotify
I've been a premium user for almost a year now and with the release of the iPhone and Android app earlier this autumn they really nailed it. This is the first time I'm willing to pay for music since the 90's.

Runners up: Basecamp, Dropbox, Evernote

Should have been nominated: MindMeister
The absolutely gorgeous mindmapping service. No doubt one of the best web apps I've ever used.

2. Best community site

My vote: Twitter
Great for networking and business, I've got more work thanks to Twitter in the last six months than I've ever got from LinkedIn.

Runners up: Vimeo, Flickr

3. Best API use

My vote: FriendFeed
I was just a couple of days from ordering new business cards with my FriendFeed url but dropped that idea when they were acquired by Facebook. Not knowing the intentions of Facebook made me change my mind.

Runner up: Twitpic

4. Interactive site of the year

My vote: GE Smart Grid augmented reality / North Kingdom
Augmented reality is one of the top trends of 2009 and made really cool in this campaign. Print the paper and try it out.

Runner up: Made for each other / B-reel

5. Blog of the year

My vote: I Love Typography
As typography has been one of most abused parts of web design on the web over the years ILT does a great job enlightening designers (including yours truly) and making the web better.

Runners up: A List Apart, FreelanceSwitch, UX Booth

6. Podcast of the year

My vote: CreativeXpert
Worth every second of listening.

Runners up: Boagworld, Buzz Out Loud, UIE Brain Sparks

Honorable mention: Read Between The Leading
Probably too new to be nominated but has been really good so far and if they go on like this they should be rewarded with a nomination next year.

7. Vodcast of the year

My vote: The Social Web
I'm having a hard time catching all episodes (I'm busy with TED) but this is the only vodcast that I actively follow.

Runner up: This Week in Startups

8. Design agency of the year

My vote: Erskine
There's such a broad variety among all the nominees which makes it very hard to pick a single winner... But as you have to make a choice I'm going for Erskine...

9. Innovation of the year

My vote: Google Chrome
My weapon of choice on my netbook. Amazingly fast and stable.

Runners up: Guardian Open Platform, Yahoo YQL

10. Web personality of the year

My vote: Peter Sunde
For the love of the internets.

Runners up: Douglas Bowman, Seth Godin

11. Viral campaign of the year

My vote: Best job in the world / Nitro
I still follow the blog...

Runners up: Skittles, T-Mobile Flash Mobs

12. Standards champion

My vote: Molly Holzschlag
Faught well at Microsoft.

Runners up: Christian Heilmann, Jared Spool

13. Open source application of the year

My vote: Drupal
Biased? Me? Noooo.... ;)

Runners up: WordPress, Firefox, jQuery

14. Redesign of the year

My vote: Whitehouse.gov
Yes they could.

Runners up: Panda.org, Skittles

15. Mobile site of the year

My vote: m.guardian.co.uk
Great content and easy to use. One of my most frequently used time killers.

Runners up: m.flickr.com, en.m.wikipedia.org

16. Mobile app of the year

My vote: Evernote
Before Evernote notes were trash, now they are precious.

Runners up: Remember The Milk

Should have been nominated: MindMeister, Spotify

17. Infamy Awards

My vote: RIAA
Pure evil.

Runners up: Pretty much anyone but I guess that "social media consultants" are the lesser of all those evils...
